Dubai flooding: More rain forecast after heavy rains in Dubai

Dubai- In the last week, from 16th April 2024, Dubai experienced a record-breaking rainfall in 75 years. Approximately 100 millimeters of rain fell in just 12 hours on last Tuesday near Dubai airport. Meanwhile, in some areas around 250 mm of heavy rains in Dubai was recorded. More rain is forecast from the 22nd of April, meteorological experts say.   

It was a natural disaster and never seen before in the Middle East region. The rainfall causes heavy flooding in Dubai and almost across all Emirates of the UAE. UAE residents faced traffic jams, flooded roads, and parking and almost all flights were canceled. Schools and Offices remain closed. Children took remote learning classes throughout the week. Offices also offered work from home to their employees, and everything remained shut till Thursday.   

Now this week, meteorological experts from the UAE have confirmed there will be more rain in some areas of the UAE. They also confirmed that the upcoming showers are not a cause for concern and will not be as severe as last week’s weather event. The country is bracing for more rain starting today, Monday after a particularly heavy storm last Tuesday. It is the heaviest rainfall in 75 years and has surprised everyone in a region known for its dry weather.

Sheikh Hamdan orders early salary payment 

Sheikh Hamdan orders the government to pay early salaries to Dubai government employees, social workers of Dubai government, and military personnel. The order is to pay the salaries by the 23rd of April,2024. The order is due to the heavy rainfall and flooding that hit the country last Tuesday.   

On Twitter, Dubai’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan added a message: 

“A special thank you to all who have contributed. Dubai will remain a beautiful place to be.”

No rain alert for this week

Meteorological experts say that there will be light to moderate showers from Monday, 22nd April. The showers might start in the evening and remain till Wednesday. However, there is no need for an emergency alert. After Wednesday the weather is expected to be clear. The temperature will drop by 5 to 7 degrees.

An NCM (National Centre of Meteorology) expert stated that:

”There’s no need for concern. It’s not compared to last week’s rainfall. It’s not going to be intense; you can expect moderate, with clouds shifting from the western coast towards the United Arab Emirates.”

Returning to normal after heavy rains in Dubai

After heavy rains in Dubai, within a few days’ roads are going back to normal in Dubai. The delivery services in Dubai, also resuming gradually. All the security and relief teams worked harder together in this difficult time. Additionally, all the UAE residents helped each other with food supplies and offered accommodations to the affected people.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum also added on Twitter:

“At a meeting with government officials in Dubai, we set directives to prepare comprehensive plans in response to natural crises’ such as the unexpected current weather conditions.”

Dubai metro update

The Metro station was flooded after intense rainfall last Tuesday. It is still experiencing disruptions following the unusually heavy rains in Dubai. Operations were severely affected, leading to stranded commuters and overcrowding at stations throughout the Emirate.

According to the update from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the Dubai metro is now running between Centrepoint and Expo 2020 as well as UAE exchange stations.

DXB airport resume flights

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is considered as one of the busiest airports in the world. A report suggests that: 549 flights get delayed or cancelled due to heavy rains in Dubai. 302 flights were Emirates Airlines and the other 152 flights of FlyDubai.

Emirates added on Twitter,

“Emirates extends our sincerest apologies to impacted customers”.

They also added:

“Our teams are working hard to restore our scheduled operations”
